Understanding the Marketing Mix: A Friendly Guide from Your Freelance Digital Marketer

If you’ve got a product or service you’re trying to sell, you’ve probably heard of something called the “marketing mix.”

Sounds a bit technical, right? Don’t worry it’s actually super simple. Think of it as four basic things you need to figure out so you can sell your stuff in the best way possible.

The Four P’s are

  • product
  • price
  • place
  • promotion

Let’s Talk About Each “P”

  1. Product : What Are You Selling?

This is what you’re offering to your customers. It could be anything: cookies, handmade jewelry, skincare, coaching sessions, digital art, you name it.

But here’s the big question:

Why would someone want it?

What makes it special or different?

If you sell candles, are they eco-friendly? Do they come in unique scents? Are they great gifts? The more you understand what makes your product awesome, the easier it is to tell people about it.

  1. Price : What Does It Cost?

Price isn’t just about numbers. It’s about value.

If you price too high, people might hesitate.

If you price too low, they might think it’s not worth much.

You want a price that feels fair to you and to your customer.

Also, think about things like discounts, bundles, or special offers. Those little touches can help people say “yes” to buying.

  1. Place : Where Can People Buy It?

This is about making your product easy to find and buy. Are you selling:

On Instagram or TikTok?

Through a website or Etsy shop?

In a local store or weekend market?

The key is to show up where your customers are already hanging out. If they love shopping on their phones, make sure it’s simple to buy with just a few taps.

  1. Promotion : How Do People Find Out About It?

This is how you spread the word

You don’t need to be a big brand to promote your stuff, you just need to show up in ways that feel real and honest.

That could mean:

Posting behind the scenes on Instagram

Sending out a quick email to your subscribers

Working with an influencer who loves what you do

Or even just asking happy customers to tell their friends

Promotion is about building trust and making people curious enough to check you out.

Why Does All This Matter?

You can have an amazing product but if the price feels off, no one knows it exists, or it’s hard to buy… people might not take the next step.

The marketing mix helps you see the big picture and get all these little pieces working together, so your business can grow more smoothly and with less guesswork.
